CF News: Fair and Balanced

Joey actually slept through the night last night! I know everyone is looking for massive miracle cures, (if you are visit www.ccff.ca and make a donation) but I am happy with this small victory. He was still very sore when he woke up and it took a couple of doses of IV pain med to get the day started, but he slept through the night.

Can’t wait to see what the rest of the day holds…

Here’s the idea of what (possibly) happens when you drop a stent into an important area:

The stent is a physical way to prop open a vessel. To give a picture for your mind’s eye, envision the spring from a Bic pen. However, unlike a spiral spring, the stent is somewhat of a knitted matrix that can be expanded in 3D to fit whatever tube it is put in. So, it starts small, but you apply it with a balloon that expands it to fit the blood/liver vessel that it needs to prop open.

Simple. Obvious solution, Easy way to make patient healthy. Right?

    Ah, no. 😦

Here is the problem: We (Western medicine) have the ability to physically fix a problem, but we are not yet able to drop a chunk of metal into a body and be confident that it won’t be hated on by the immune system. Stents are notorious for harassing the vessel’s walls – (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrombosis).

Back in the day, I committed something like 75% of waking hours for 9 months on the subject of biomimetic methods to apply stents more nicely (grad project)….and I assure you that unfortunately there is not way that we can make stents play nice with human bodies :/

Cliffs Notes: Sorry Joey…apparently stents don’t agree with u. LOL? Sorry man. Thrombosis FTL.

Uh, the preceding implies that stents are troublemakers. I assure y’all that they are normally cool. Save a lot more lives than they affect, etc. Caveman not have stent, caveman die alot, heh.

Just that for Joey + 15%ish for population, they are not well received by the body 😦
