CF Sucks

Last night I was approached by someone I know whose 4 year old nephew has CF. She wanted details on the walk in Powell River, to sponsor the Joey’s Angels team, and to potentially walk with us.

This really lit a fire under my ass and renewed my passion in the fight against this shitty disease. It’s not that that passion ever really went away, but I am burnt out. Cystic Fibrosis is awful. It suffocates those who are directly affected by it and finds all kinds of other obstacles to throw in the paths of CFers and their families. Hearing that CF is impacting yet another person I care about is intolerable and revived in me a sense of urgency to find a cure or effective control. I am tired of people suffering. I have had it with the stream of crap that befalls those affected. I am sick of CF.

The Great Strides walk in Powell River is at 10:00 on Sunday, May 29th. There is an option to do a 3 km walk, or a 5.5 km run. Walk participants are meeting at Willingdon Beach and do a loop to the Westview ferry terminal. Those who opt to do the run follow the same route, with the addition of the Willingdon Beach trail. The gang will then meet back at the beach. The aim is to make the Powell River Great Strides walk inclusive to participants of all ages and capabilities, raise money to fight CF, and have a good time in the process.

If you are interested in registering for the walk, or creating your own team, please visit and click on the Great Strides link. When selecting the community you wish to participate in, choose the “virtual location” option (this can be done by anyone in any community that isn’t listed, so you can participate regardless of where you live). If you wish to sponsor the Joey’s Angels team, follow the same link, choose the sponsor a walker option, and search for our team name. Or, if you would rather, cheque or cash donations can be mailed to me at:

Cheques should be made out to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Any support that can be mustered up is greatly appreciated. Let’s do the J-Dub proud!

I’m going to finish off with a little diddy that I read on our friend Kimberly Burge’s Great Strides page because it made me laugh, cry, and gave me hope. Important note: she is currently pregnant in an extreme sense of the word. Here’s her Great Strides message:

This February, I lost my wonderful friend Joey to Cystic Fibrosis. He was my main supplier of laughs, winks, cheeky compliments, and chocolate. I miss him terribly. I think it would make him happy to see me waddle across town with my massive belly and ill behaved hound dog. He would have teased me the first half of the way, until we got tired, then he would have called us a taxi to the finish line. Please sponsor us. Cystic Fibrosis Sucks.

That’s pretty much how things would have gone down. Please join us. CF sucks.

Kim it would make him very happy. I remember the 1st walk I did with J&K in Comox along with my gf Carmen & bulldog Dobber. We knew Dobbie wouldn’t make the 10 km, so we brought a wagon. Well Dobbie was pooped so we put her in the wagon. She was scared of it and kept jumping out, leaving me no choice but to jump in the wagon with her and let Carmen pull us. Fond memory.
